Timber Hudson was interested in…me? It took a long time to get past that fact. Sometimes I still thought of him as the super star who would have never given me the time of day back on Earth. Or maybe he would have if our paths had crossed. It’s hard to say. There are so many “what ifs” to factor into our situation. Those “what ifs” that I had to ignore if I had any hope of actually seeing how compatible we actually were. Because it was hard to not wonder. It always would be, no matter what, right? So I just had to drown them out.

Most of the time, I didn’t see Timber as the mega star and embodiment of the perfect manly body. Spending enough time with a person, makes you see them as just them. He’d always been a human being even if he’d been unobtainable. The sexy body was still present, though less toned than I originally thought. I noticed that our first full day together. All those rock hard abs were still present, sure, but unless he was working out he had a softness to him just like everyone else. Just goes to show the power of movie magic.

Tangent aside, he was so much a normal dude, the OMGIMDATINGAMOVIESTARFACTOR faded fast after the initial shock wore off. Having never been in a relationship before, I wasn’t sure what to do exactly. Timber said being natural was fine, but what if it wasn’t enough? I’d never been the touchy-feely-giggly girl who fawned over anyone. At work, I’d crushed on Wicken for a bit, and I only ended up treating him like crap. Sarcasm got thicker, teasing was plentiful. How did I successfully be a girlfriend?

It took at least a week before I got comfortable with holding Timber’s hand when we went out to walk or do anything “on the town”. When Paul saw us doing it, he grinned like a proud parent of an honor roll student. If there were cars, he’d have a bumper sticker “My kids are holding hands”. Then of course, there was Rumor who gave us the stink eye every time we went by. I could see the manipulative gears turning in her mind.

“You shouldn’t let her get into your head,” Timber said, noticing how I was glaring right back at her. “Giving her attention is just feeding her ego. She thinks we care because the world obviously revolves around her.”

“I want to make sure she knows you’re off limits.”

“She does, and it won’t stop her from trying.” He shrugged. “Anytime she catches me alone, she basically flings herself onto me.”

Not what I wanted to hear. “Are you ever tempted even a little? Be honest.” Because Rumor was gorgeous like the models he used to date, if not even more so. She wasn’t generic looking like them. She stood out. Sure, she was evil, but guys didn’t always think about that until after the fact. Not when they were in need of release, or if a girl was convincing enough. I’d seen it enough at school and on TV. I couldn’t deny biology.

“Tempted to go off with her?” he asked. I nodded. He shook his head. “People who treat me like a thing aren’t attractive. I confess, if she touches me in the right way, it makes me miss…things…but not to the point where I’d use her as an outlet. I do have self-control, you know. I’m not a cave man.”

“Just trying to understand, I guess. And be realistic.”

He stopped and forced me to gaze up at him. “Chev, only guys who don’t know who they are and what they want fall for her petty tricks. Or they know and in a spot where they don’t care. I don’t fall into either of those categories.” A smile, and then he kissed me. “Why do you think I would?”

“Because you miss…things.” As he so delicately put it.

“You’ll understand someday,” he said quietly. “But it’s not a big deal. Don’t feel like we have to rush to that spot just for me. I’m happy. Promise. And I’m…figuring it out.”

“Promise you’re happy?” Because sometimes I wasn’t so sure. He was an actor. What if he was faking certain emotions to keep me from worrying.

Then he made that face he does when he’s taking the time to think and feel. I’d seen him do it a few times before. Like he was analyzing himself, wondering if perhaps it was an act too. “Honestly, I’m the happiest I’ve been in a long time.”
